All about SPMT:

A self-propelled modular transporter or a self-propelled modular trailer (SPMT) has proved itself to be an indispensable part of the logistics industry. A modernized version of a hydraulic modular trailer, an SPMT is a platform-heavy hauler with an array of computer-controlled wheels with the characteristic 360-degree steering of individual wheels. The feature-packed SPMTs can lift and move colossal objects, such as large sections of civil constructions, petrochemical equipment, and even spacecraft. Carrying such massive and over-dimensional cargo makes SPMTs quite slow, often moving at under one mile per hour while fully loaded. Hence, these trailers are used for on-site transportation over limited distances.

The Chief Characteristics of SPMT:

Stability and loading capacity are the key strength of SPMT. Each torsion-free and bending-resistant trailer unit can be separated into 3 to 4 hydraulic fields. Each field can maintain hydraulic pressure to each axle in that field. This allows the trailer to adjust for uneven surfaces increasing the stability of the loads.

The SPMTs with their elaborate Power Pack Units (PPU) generate enough power for the hydraulic systems controlling axle height, steering, braking, and the electrical systems. With each Diesel engine rated at 350 kW, SPMTs provide cost-effective transport for over-dimensional cargoes. Further, the thoroughly modular SPMTs can be coupled together end to end or side by side to create multiple transport configurations.

SPMTs come in numerous variants from 4-axle to 16-axle. Axles, in turn, can either be propelled or the ones that are powered by a power pack unit (PPU) and start functioning; braked or those axles that always remain in braked position, only to be powered by a power pack unit (PPU) at the time of movement. While the free-wheeling axles remain in a free position. The braking and acceleration of these axles are separately controlled by the Power pack unit (PPU).

Each axle in the SPMT can be controlled independently by the computer steering system allowing the trailers to move in several pre-programmed steering modes or manual control modes. Trailers can be combined mechanically or separately, still acting as one unit. This allows for any conceivable steering movement.

How SPMTs are utilized in the Prism Projects:

Thinking beyond boundaries spurred Prism to be India's first logistics company to introduce state-of-the-art SPMTs as early as 2008 when transportation of a Hydrogen Bullet weighing 400+ MT was accomplished using SPMT for safe and hassle-free transportation. There has been no looking back for Prism since then. The company has made effective use of SPMTs in the execution of various projects for its distinguished clientele both in India as well as all over the world.

Over the years, Prism has made great strides, evolving into a logistical giant. The company’s ceaseless efforts culminated in a ground-breaking project in 2023 where Prism made extensive use of the SPMTs thus executing India's first Side Roll-off operation to move as many as 34 over-dimensional cargoes, the combined weight of which was 13000+ MT, from from Dahej, Hazira, and Mangalore to Mundra Jetty. The project has been a crowning achievement for the entire Prism team. The following is a short list of a few projects recently undertaken by Prism where the company used SMPTs to aid the smooth transportation of ODCs.

  • Early in 2024 Prism Logistics undertook a crucial venture of shipping 1700+ MT of cargo via multimodal transportation from the loading point at Hazira, Gujarat to Panipat Refinery, Haryana. SPMTs were used unsparingly in this project.
  • In the year 2024, Prism Logistics made effective use of SPMTs during the Inland transportation of 800+ MT of Coke Chambers from Kandla Sez to Kandla Port in the first leg of the transportation and from Simariya Jetty to Barauni Refinery, Bihar during the final stage.
  • In 2023 an ODC consignment weighing a total of 1300+ MT was shipped from the starting point at Kandla to Kandla Port, Gujarat using SPMTs.
  • In 2023 cargoes weighing 500+ MT were transported from the Hazira site to Hazira Port and again from Buxar Jetty to the Buxar site employing SPMTs.
  • In 2023 Prism transported a shipment of 8 over-dimensional cargoes weighing a formidable 2500+ MT from the Dahej site, Gujarat to Adani Port, Dahej using SPMTs extensively.
  • In 2022 Prism used SPMTs to a great extent when it embarked on a mission to transport 5 over-dimensional cargoes weighing a total of 1500+ MT from Jamnagar to Nayara Refinery, Gujarat In 2018, Prism offered 3rd Country logistical services executing multimodal transportation of 500+ MT of cargo from Adani Port, Hazira to a refinery in Huelva, Spain. SPMTs were indispensable during the execution of the project.

To wrap it up:

It takes grit to scale to the very summit of success when it comes to persevering and leading an ever-flourishing domain like the logistics industry. Prism, guided by its visionary and prudent leaders, has always been ahead of its competitors by investing heavily in technology. The top management at Prism knew that only the latest technology would enable the company to stay abreast with the fast pace of developing India and the world, thus, introducing specialized equipment like SPMTs and other high-value amenities to the existing fleet to provide the best services to its clients. Presently owning 200+ SPMTs and PPUs and having a pool of skilled SPMT operators Prism strives constantly to surpass its previous records. Achieving new feats has now become a routine with the Prism team. THINK BIG | THINK SAFE | THINK PRISM
